“Paradise
City” is Colon’s slogan. And it says it all. It is worth travelling
to Entre Rios just to see this city, one of the main tourist attractions
in this province due to its natural beauty and its interesting historic
buildings. The first constitutional president, the General Justo José
de Urquiza, founded this city, the capital of the department, which bears
the same name, in 1863. On the day of its foundation, Urquiza said “the
most beautiful place on the Uruguay River coast”. He was right.:
now the city is the province tourism capital. In spite of being an important
city, it is ideal for those who want to escape the hustle and bustle of
big cities, seeking for peace. It often happens that cities are not as
attractive as their surrounding areas. This is not the case with Colon,
a natural balcony next to the Uruguay river (“Birds river”
in guarani), full of little islands and streets lined by trees. The traveller
can find in Colon optimal services to meet his/her every need, ranging
from international hotels to camping spots with all necessary comforts..
This city is home to one of the most important festivals in the province:
the National Handicraft Fair, which takes place in February in the traditional
Quiros Park and in which the most important artisans in Latin America
meet. Across the international Artigas bridge, close to the city, the
traveller can reach PaysandĂş, in the neighbouring country of Uruguay.
