
The
old city of Ilheus, 462 kilometres south of Salvador, with 242, 445 inhabitants
is the beautiful place where the cocoa barons resided on the seashore.
Jorge Amado renamed this city. After the shooting of the film based on
his famous novel –Gabriela, clove and cinnamon- Ilheus got to be
known as “the land of Gabrielaâ€.
Matrix church of São Jorge dos Ilhéus: the oldest church
in the city dates from 1556. It has a colonial style and a museum of Sacred
Art.
São Sebastián Cathedral: neoclassic style.
Paranagua Palace: the Prefecture operates there. It was built in 1901
in the same place where the ruins of a Jesuitical school stood.
Jorge Amado’s House: Jorge Amado lived and wrote there in his youth.
PaÃs do Carnaval. At present the site of the Cultural Association
of the Academy of Letters and the Historic Institute of Ilheus.
Praia dos Millonarios: the place where landowners go, therefore its name.
It is worth mentioning its 30 barracks and bars.
Praia do Cururupe: Old village decimated by the Portuguese in 1559.
Excursions: Itacaré, Comandatuba, Mata Atlantica tours, visiting
cocoa plantations.
